On Tuesday, August 22 we delivered school supplies for second through fifth grades at Oak Grove Elementary School. Last spring, the teachers gave us a list of items they knew they would need for their classrooms, and through your generosity, we were able to provide all of them! We caught up with a number of our wonderful teachers as we delivered the supplies. They were all organizing their rooms and working on plans to welcome students in a few short weeks. We look forward to working with them throughout the school year. Volunteers from River Road UMC also were there delivering much needed supplies for kindergarten and first grade.
Trinity has served as a Micah partner at Oak Grove since 2004. We have had the pleasure of following a number of our graduates through high school and beyond. Working with these vibrant students in South Richmond has been a challenging and rewarding opportunity. We welcome your participation in this ministry. Whether you serve as a weekly Literacy Team volunteer or classroom aide or participate in one of our many “Done in a Day” projects, your work is of great value.
Watch for our Oak Grove Volunteer Brochure in the Welcome Center and follow opportunities in The Trinity Connection. Join the fun and make a difference in the lives of our students.
Thank you for your overwhelming generosity and for being a part of such a wonderfully caring faith community! Karen Adams for the Oak Grove Team
What an awesome July week at SHIPWRECKED, Jesus Rescues Vacation Bible School!!! 197 kids participated and around 100 youth and adult helpers served. Thanks so much to all parents for bringing their kids and the volunteers for making it such a special week! It was so awesome to see all the smiling faces moving through the decorated hallways each day and knowing that each child had the opportunity to learn about the love of God and that Jesus is always with them.
A huge amount of Items for Oakgrove School, Sherbourne UMC Food Pantry, Honduras, and Richmond Animal League were brought in by the kids. In addition the 4th & 5th graders served by creating plastic mats for the homeless and working with Trinity’s youth at Richmond Community Hospital. In addition to the items brought in, VBS collected almost $1000 to go toward special mission projects.
Here are a few comments from volunteers who help with VBS:
Great job! So well organized
Loved the music!
I love having a different color to wear each day.
4th/5th grade group liked their field trip and community project.
Children enjoyed the music and imagination station the best.
The children were engaged and really enjoyed learning new songs and seeing the short video clips.
Every station we went to was prepared, and the leaders kept the kids engaged for the entire time. It was really wonderful.
I really liked the addition of the Kid Vid Cinema.
Thank you to all the volunteers who helped make VBS an amazing week!

Please know this was a tough decision. This decision was made based upon real time weather conditions within two blocks of Trinity UMC. Over night snowfall created a crunchy, slushy mess on road and sidewalk surfaces. While it does not appear to be much, the snowfall was just enough to create slippery conditions. Additionally, we are experiencing freezing rain in the neighborhood, so power lines, trees, and all other surfaces are getting a glaze of ice at this time.
As I’m sure you have already heard in the media, General Conference ended yesterday approving the Traditional Plan. This is an extremely contentious and painful time. It is not, however, the end of the story.
What I can say to you today is that at Trinity we will continue to be who we have been: followers of Jesus Christ, centered around Jesus Christ, striving to love ALL God’s children as Jesus Christ has commanded us.
I would ask two things of you. First, that you pray for our United Methodist Church. Secondly, please join us for a “GC Debrief” meeting after worship (noon, March 3) in the sanctuary. We will do our best to explain what has just happened, talk about it, and then reflect on what may come next.
In these times may God’s love be in us and flow through us.
Pastor Larry
General Conference Debrief (March 3, 2019)
After worship on Sunday, March 3, the Trinity community came together for a General Conference Debrief. That conversation can be seen below.
We had over 160 children participate this year – many from our community!! Every day kids were smiling, laughing, and having fun while learning that God is with us no matter what we are going through. The story of Daniel was presented through skits, crafts, stories, and songs so that kids can connect and understand how God is with them in all situations. VBS cannot take place without the many volunteers who contributed during the week! Thank you to all who contributed needed items and gave of their time to share God’s love with kids in our church and community! It was exciting to witness all of the friendships and relationships between kids and adults develop throughout the week! To all who volunteered, you made an ETERNAL impact on God’s kingdom!!
PARENT CUE:
For those of you who had children who participated in VBS, here are some questions you can ask them about their experience: 1. What was one fun thing that you did at VBS? 2. What was the best part of your week? 3. Who is one person you got to know better? 4. What is one word or phrase that sticks out in your mind about VBS? 5. What is one thing about the week that surprised you? 6. What is one thing that you learned about God, yourself, or others?
The COVID-19 virus has impacted all of our lives in many ways. First and foremost, we hope that all members of our Trinity family are healthy, safe, and continuing to find spiritual enrichment through our great church. Our committee met recently to discuss the potential impact of the temporary church shutdown on Trinity’s finances. Here are a few things that we would like to communicate to the congregation:
Tithes and Offerings – Please continue to support our church with your tithes and offerings, as you are able, during our temporary shutdown. Our expenses continue, even though we will not have a chance to pass the offering plates. We encourage everyone to continue giving in your typical pattern/frequency via online methods, or by mailing checks to the church office at 903 Forest Avenue, Henrico, VA 23229.
Online Giving – if you do not give online already, this is a good opportunity to switch! Trinity has several ways to give online currently, including ACH, e-check, and credit card. We are also investigating new ways to automate giving as well, including Zelle and Paypal. These are all easy, safe, and consistent ways to provide your gifts to Trinity. Please visit https://www.trinityrva.net/give/ for more information.
Apportionments – our committee voted to temporarily suspend monthly apportionment payments to the Conference, until we determine if Trinity will be financially impacted during this time. While we intend to pay our apportionments in full by their due date (December 31, 2020), we want to be sure that funding is available to meet our essential expenses, most notably our priority to fund payroll for our clergy and staff.
Capital Projects – Trinity remains committed to investing in long-term capital projects to grow our church and fulfill our mission. Our trustees are moving forward with several exciting projects, which are largely funded outside of our operating budget. Major capital projects will continue to be subject to church council approval, and will be evaluated in the context of our overall financial health.
